Container ports since the 1980s have competed fiercely for market share, investing billions of dollars in terminals and port infrastructure to become load centers for their regions. Now the load center ports on the West and East coasts are scrambling to rebuild their older facilities and build new terminals to accommodate vessels with capacities of 14,000 20-foot containers and larger.
