One of the roadblocks to adoption of blockchain-backed systems is the perception that it is difficult for developers to monetize such solutions. The lion’s share of blockchain enterprise products are still in a pilot or proof of concept stage, particularly in price-sensitive areas such as logistics. But judging by remarks made around the Copenhagen-based company’s second-quarter earnings on Thursday, Maersk is bullish that it and its TradeLens co-developer IBM will be able to extract revenue for the value the solution provides. “The concept for TradeLens is that the shippers will be the customers,” Maersk CEO Søren Skou said during the company’s second quarter earnings call Thursday, according to a transcript from Seeking Alpha. “The revenue model will be that shippers will be paying for access to all the data on the shipments.” Skou said TradeLens currently has eight customers. “All of them [are] big-name companies that, of course, our pilot customers are interested in the new platform because they think it can help to manage their supply chain, improve visibility, make it more efficient, and so on. So that's where we are. We are building towards TradeLens becoming a business in its own right.” Skou said Maersk envisions TradeLens operating as an “internet of trade.” “We are building, if you will, the platform and the network, the ecosystem on the TradeLens platform. It was a very important step to get commitments from some of the largest carriers in the world to join the platform because without the data from the carriers, the platform will not be interesting for the customer,” he said. “So now towards the rest of this year we'll do the work to actually get these carriers on board. We will have about 60 percent of global capacity on the network, then on the platform. We are at the same time building the platform with the land-side participants — container terminals, container truckers, railroads, and so on — so that we get as much of a network coming with as many participants as possible.” Profit sharing model in the future? That Maersk wants to monetize its investment in TradeLens should not be surprising, but the industry will be curious as to how it goes about attaining revenue. For one, shippers will be measuring how much value TradeLens creates versus established products that attempt to accomplish some or most of what TradeLens is designed to create, including shipment visibility and a digital repository for trade and logistics-related documents. For example, JOC.com has learned from various industry sources that TradeLens’ initial pricing plans for cargo visibility are high relative to the plethora of visibility solutions already on the market. TradeLens will thus have to prove to prospective customers that the value of the visibility it provides is that much higher. It is likely to do so based on both the number of entities involved at present — more than 100 container lines, port authorities, terminal operators, and customs agencies are already signed on — but also due to the touted data security and authenticity benefits of blockchain. Then there’s the issue of how pricing and revenue distribution are calculated, once the rival carriers that have joined TradeLens are fully on board. In other words, will those carriers collectively share in the revenue TradeLens generates, or will they only be compensated for the specific data they provide or the customers they bring on board? “The TradeLens go-to-market strategy is directed under a collaboration agreement between IBM and Maersk,” Maersk said in a statement to JOC.com. “Under this agreement, the two organizations jointly build and develop the solution for companies and organizations from across the shipping and logistics industry [to] join as ecosystem members. This structure was created with input from incumbent organizations from around the world. “Over time, as the solution develops and matures, we’ve stated that consideration will be given to entity formation, upon which time the structure, including sales activities, may be re-evaluated to increase momentum and uptake where opportunities are present.” The latter bit suggests that Maersk is open to a profit-sharing model with other carriers or entities driving adoption and use of the platform. UWL Chief Executive Duncan Wright said in a letter to customers this week the company signed a contract with Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) to become the new vessel operator on its Sun Chief Express Service, replacing Swire Shipping, part of Asian conglomerate Swire Group. UWL originally partnered with Swire <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/new-vietnam-pnw-express-service-comes-amid-rise-in-se-asia-imports-5195234">to launch the Sun Chief Express in 2022</a>. The service connects Vietnam’s Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City ports with Seattle, offering about 2,700 TEUs in biweekly vessel capacity and an approximate 20-day sailing time. Wright said that while UWL was vetting other vessel operators for possibly offering a weekly service, Swire decided to “phase out” its involvement in the Sun Chief service. The last Swire ship will depart Ho Chi Minh port on July 14, while two westbound sailings during July on Swire vessels will be blanked as part of the phaseout. DHL Express Canada locked out Unifor workers on June 8 after the two sides couldn’t reach a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement. DHL was <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/dhl-express-to-suspend-canadian-parcel-business-amid-labor-dispute-6026786">forced to shut down service</a> as of June 20, the day Canadian federal legislation preventing the use of replacement workers went into effect. As a result, DHL stopped accepting parcels within Canada as well as cross-border US-Canada business. The move did not affect the company’s less-than-truckload or other supply chain service businesses. DHL’s competitors such as Canada Post, FedEx, and UPS were operating normally, so the overall disruption within Canada was minimal. Transportation analysts at the global bank indicated in the report that while carriers will remain profitable through the period, it will be nowhere near the three record years of 2021, 2022 and 2024. “We expect tariff uncertainties to weigh on demand from [the second half of 2025] and bring the focus back to overcapacity and earnings downside,” the report stated. HSBC is expecting a 45% year-over-year <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/global-uncertainty-to-erode-ocean-carrier-profits-in-2025-6016400">decline in profits for the container shipping</a> industry this year, a steeper 61% decline in profits in 2026 and a further 10% slide in 2027. No profit amounts were provided. “We expect profits for the sector through 2027, but an aggressive price war by carriers could drive losses,” the bank said. Carriers earned close to $60 billion in operating profits in 2024, which followed a $1.4 billion loss the previous year. Pandemic-driven profits in 2022 hit a record $208 billion, beating the previous record of $110 billion set in 2021. Among nine publicly traded ocean carriers, revenue for 2025 is expected to reach $138.2 billion, according to Capital IQ Estimates, down from $155.5 billion in 2024. Drewry earlier this month outlined its profit forecast for carriers, expecting operating profit for the industry to fall to $20 billion this year, down from over $50 billion in 2024. Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen and Yang Ming have maintained their 2025 profit forecasts, while Maersk, HMM and Ocean Network Express have cut their full-year guidance because of the uncertainty surrounding tariffs. “Frontloading in the trans-Pacific on tariff concerns buoyed first-quarter earnings, while a tariff pause-led cargo rush drove a 73% surge in the SCFI during the second quarter,” the HSBC report noted. Spot rates from Asia to the US West Coast peaked on June 6 at $6,040 per FEU but have fallen 55% since then to $2,700 per FEU as of Wednesday, down 16% on the week, according to Platts, a Journal of Commerce sister company within S&amp;P Global. <h3>Red Sea diversions elevate rates </h3>Rates on the Asia-Europe trade lane have held at elevated levels because of the ongoing longer transits around southern Africa to avoid potential Houthi militant attacks in the Red Sea, HSBC said. <div class="phx-topic">A Mexico City-based logistics company will launch a twice-monthly combined ocean-trucking service between Mexico’s Gulf Coast and the US East Coast in late July, offering shippers a way to avoid cross-border surface delays and <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/congress-makes-fresh-attempt-to-target-cargo-theft-in-us-5982118">security concerns</a>. The service by Green Tide Logistics will connect Veracruz to Philadelphia in five to six days via truck and multi-purpose vessels (MPVs) capable of handling 1,200 to 1,700 TEUs. Via truck only, the route typically takes up to 10 days. Green Tide CEO Hans Schriwer said the service will start July 28 with a single time-chartered MPV; the company has plans to expand to a weekly service using two vessels in the fourth quarter. “There’s huge potential in terms of steering stuff away from nearly all truck, to a combination of truck and ocean,” Schriwer told the Journal of Commerce. “With nearshoring, we felt that the timing now was appropriate to push this through.” The service will handle inland Mexico via truck and then move cargo out of Tuxpan and Coatzacoalcos via ocean to Philadelphia. Once in the US, Schriwer said customers can choose truck or rail to get the shipment to its destination. That marked a 26% month-over-month increase but a 29% reduction on the year. Overall, the ocean trade has shrunk 51% since May 2019, when ECNA received 5,619 TEUs from Mexico. A Mexico City-based logistics company will launch a twice-monthly combined ocean-trucking service between Mexico’s Gulf Coast and the US East Coast in late July, offering shippers a way to avoid cross-border surface delays and security concerns . The service by Green Tide Logistics will connect Veracruz to Philadelphia in five to six days via truck and multi-purpose vessels (MPVs) capable of handling 1,200 to 1,700 TEUs. Via truck only, the route typically takes up to 10 days. Green Tide CEO Hans Schriwer said the service will start July 28 with a single time-chartered MPV; the company has plans to expand to a weekly service using two vessels in the fourth quarter. “There’s huge potential in terms of steering stuff away from nearly all truck, to a combination of truck and ocean,” Schriwer told the Journal of Commerce. “With nearshoring, we felt that the timing now was appropriate to push this through.” The service will handle inland Mexico via truck and then move cargo out of Tuxpan and Coatzacoalcos via ocean to Philadelphia. Once in the US, Schriwer said customers can choose truck or rail to get the shipment to its destination. The world of LTL is slow to embrace change. Business anachronisms permeate current supply chain processes. These vestiges of the way things used to work define the LTL freight transportation procurement process of many modern shippers.David Knuth, logistics specialist at IEWC, a global supplier of cable and wire based in Wisconsin, is happy to have modernized the RFP process, automating the entire LTL bidding procedure with Bid$ense, SMC³’s automated truckload and LTL freight transportation sourcing solution. But when prompted, he can still recall what once was.In his previous job, a large part of his duties were consumed by creating an intermodal bid package for carriers. In a spreadsheet, Knuth detailed the company’s volumes lane by lane, taking care to delete any errant keystrokes or misleading data. He would then email out the information to each carrier, taking time to respond to detailed technical questions about the spreadsheet data. Finally, he had to compile all the results, create an algorithm that would compare the carriers on each lane, and award the business.“It was a huge undertaking. It took about four months to do,” Knuth said of the old process. “It was almost a full-time job for that part of the year, every year.”In his new job at IEWC, he sat down with Bid$ense on day one and was amazed at the capabilities. Knuth had never before used a bid tool. SMC³’s latest versions of Bid$ense automate the process even further, taking truckload and LTL RFPs entirely online. The tool draws on RFP best-practices protocols to streamline the bidding communication process, enabling bidding carriers to respond accurately and promptly to shipper requests. The solution also does all the distribution work automatically, electronically submitting shipper bid data to carriers based on their actual service capabilities and performance records. Carriers are alerted with timely prompts for RFP deliverables, so shippers aren’t waiting by the phone for responses.Another benefit of automating the process is the data-cleansing assistance. When Knuth sent spreadsheets to carriers, data errors might cloud the bidding process; he might have to resend data or simply accept a price that did not truly reflect the costs of doing business. Data cleansing is incredibly beneficial, he said.The spreadsheet technique also made bidding analysis an onerous task. Since Bid$ense automates and streamlines the entire RFP process, intensive examination is now simple. SMC³ knows that each bid has more than one best outcome. With uniform responses from each carrier, shippers can quickly rank results and create an unlimited quantity of what-if scenarios to make the optimal procurement decision.Jesse Burnett of Central Garden &amp; Pet experiences many of the same benefits. Founded in 1980, Central Garden &amp; Pet has spent the last three decades growing from a small garden supply company to a provider of a range of products from dog chews and bird seed to soil supplements and natural insecticides. For much of its life, the company shipped these disparate goods via LTL and truckload carriers to retailers throughout the country, relying on each business unit to negotiate directly with their freight transportation providers. This arrangement worked fairly well for a small company, but as Central Garden &amp; Pet expanded, leadership decided to consolidate decision making.Burnett helped centralize the transportation decision making in 2015 with SMC³’s Bid$ense. Before Bid$ense, every business unit operated independently as far as negotiating with carriers.“There were a lot of different things just floating around,” he said. “We didn’t have master agreements in place; no national pricing at all. The pricing from carriers was just all over the place, depending on where you were.”The transformations he saw with Bid$ense were immediate. Burnett has been using the tool about every other year since its implementation at the company. Central Garden and Pet’s $19.6 million 2019 LTL bid saved the company just more than 9 percent when compared to its historical average. For Burnett, though, bid automation extends far beyond savings.“We knew that we weren’t getting the best pricing offer from our carriers just because nothing was centralized,” he continued. “We knew that if we combined everything from all these business units and paired it with one corporate offering, then it would drive some cost benefit with it.”When the company initially decided to centralize bid procurement, executives researched a number of different methodologies and technologies. In the end, though, Burnett found that Bid$ense was both widespread and well known, and that his carrier partners already knew how to use the application. Burnett also highlighted the data-cleansing process as a major benefit, saying the rigorous process ensures that carriers always return the best price.“It definitely has helped drive savings,” he said. “Any time you go out there and you drive that competitiveness with the carriers and they know they’re in a bid environment, it seems to sharpen their pencils.”Transportation procurement is an integral part of the modern supply chain. With Bid$ense, shippers can develop a strategic implementation plan that saves them time and money, but also helps them create strong relationships with their carrier partners. These carriers appreciate the solution’s data-cleansing process; when carriers receive a complete shipment history and future volume forecast, they don’t have to guess on pricing. Carriers that receive more data from shippers get a complete picture of that shipper’s freight, allowing them to accurately plan instead of simply preparing for the worst-case scenario. If there’s one immutable truth in the world of logistics, it’s this: LTL is an inherently complex form of transportation. Tariffs, rates, DIM weights, transit times — it’s enough to confuse even seasoned logistics professionals. The solution to this knowledge gap has historically been on-the-job training or university supply chain education, but for a variety of reasons there is now a pressing need for third-party, remote LTL training that prepares logistics workers for transportation success. Global Scope Can Overlook Local Intricacies In the past, professionals looking to move into a supply chain career learned about the basics of supply chain from universities. However, many of these college supply chain programs are now global in scope, focusing on worldwide supply chain management instead of the intricacies of specialized domestic transportation. And even these programs, which used to be widespread, are becoming less common. LTL is not an industry of broad-brush strokes; supply chain professionals really need a pointillistic understanding of the logistics of LTL in order to excel in the industry. Accelerating Need for Dedicated LTL Education This lack of specified training put the onus on employers to prepare new hires with the LTL knowledge needed to do their jobs. Dedicated LTL study is a necessity, not a luxury. At the same time, changes in LTL and the broader supply chain world are accelerating. The reliance on e-commerce has ballooned since the start of the pandemic, and last-mile LTL shipments and related e-commerce strains on the supply chain won’t diminish once social distancing abates. That genie isn’t going back into the bottle. So supply chain employers need logistics workers that are fully versed in all aspects of the industry, ready to solve unique shipping and delivery problems based on their extensive supply chain knowledge But why care about LTL? It’s been reported that some shippers in today’s world are no longer concerned with what mode is used to ship their goods. A Multimodal Approach Ensures On-Time Delivery This mode agnosticism means supply chain stakeholders have to be well versed in all modes of transportation. As unforeseen weather events and other disruptions, such as protests, become more common, savvy logistics employees will need to be armed with familiarity of all modes, not just the most popular, to ensure that freight is delivered on time, without damage, and in the most financially expedient way possible.
